CareCounsel, LLC Joins with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to Offer Cancer Quality Care Review

San Rafael, CA, August 6, 1997 — CareCounsel has launched its unique Cancer Quality Care Review Program with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, a world-renowned leader in comprehensive cancer treatment. CareCounsel members across the country will have the opportunity to benefit from Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s expertise without having to travel to New York in most cases. Of note, U.S. News and World Report has rated Memorial Sloan-Kettering as the nation’s # 1 cancer center for the past five consecutive years.

Individuals with cancer have access through CareCounsel to independent experts at Memorial Sloan-Kettering who will review their pathology slides, radiography reports and medical records. CareCounsel members will receive a detailed written report assessing their diagnosis and the accuracy, completeness and overall quality of their treatment plan. When Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s reviewing physician or team of physicians determine that it is medically appropriate, the member will receive information about other treatment options, as well.

“Cancer Quality Care Review is an important service for both individuals and employers because of the wide variation in practice patterns and expertise in cancer care. Everyone with a potentially life threatening disease like cancer should know they are getting the proper diagnosis and treatment,” says Lawrence N. Gelb, DMH, president and CEO of CareCounsel. “Our program with Memorial Sloan-Kettering can be invaluable for patients facing a rare cancer, for those living in rural areas and for individuals with a questionable diagnosis or prognosis. HMO enrollees, who may not be able to see the cancer specialist of their choosing, should also appreciate the added assurance the Quality Review brings.”

In addition to Cancer Quality Care Review Service, CareCounsel provides “care counseling” and healthcare advocacy services; printed health and disease information from online databases and newsletters; and child care and senior care counseling, education and referrals.

Individual consumers who are interested in Cancer Quality Care Review Services can purchase it as an additional service to the CareCounsel member benefits. The CareCounsel program is also available to employers, labor trusts, purchasing coalitions and other payer groups. CareCounsel was formed in 1996 to provide comprehensive assistance to consumers as they navigate the new health and family care environment. The company is headquartered in San Rafael, California.
